Info on Trip to Cary, NC for Great American -- top 12 girls
Dear Parents -
I know many of you are receiving this and your daughter is not going on
the Cary, NC XC trip, but I thought you may be interested to hear all
the details (perhaps it will inspire your daughter to work towards going
on the trip next season!! :) )
Here is what Buz sent to the boys and their parents:
Subject: Info for Cary NC Trip, 9/30-10/1, 2011
Hello Patriots,
Sorry that this info is coming to you later than usual. Cathy and
I have been waiting to hear what portion of the trip expenses will be
paid by the athletic department. I am attaching a travel permission slip
that I would like you to sign by Friday.
So, here's the scoop:
We are taking 12 boys and 12 girls for this meet which will be one of the
best on the East Coast this weekend, drawing teams from Florida, Mass.,
New Hampshire, W. Va., Ky., California and many East Coast schools. It
will be the most competitive meet until we return for the Nike Meet on
11/26.
Boys and Girls are excused from class after 1st Block (10:25am) and we
will depart asap from the Field House. We would
like for the athletes to dress in their running clothes as we are
driving straight to the course. We will stop after 2 hours driving
(around Chatham, Va.) to eat and let the boys and girls stretch their
legs. We will try to be on the course around 3pm.
Then we drive to hotel to shower and change for dinner. We will make
dinner reservations to eat by 6pm at the latest and then back to hotel
for team meeting and then early to bed.
Comfort Suites Cary on 350 Ashville Ave. Cary, 27518 (919-852-4318).
Ist race on Saturday will be the Boys RACE of CHAMPIONS @ 10:40am. The
top 7 boys will eat breakfast at the hotel (free breakfast) by 7am and
will leave the hotel between 8-8:15am, depending on weather. We will try
to get a "late checkout" and that will determine whether we checkout
before we leave or on return after the race.
Varsity Girls will RACE @ 11:45AM (GIRLS SEEDED), leaving the hotel at 9
am. Our remaining 5 boys will race at 12:10pm. They will leave hotel
about 9:45am. Girls JV will race at 12:30pm, leaving the hotel at 9:45
am. Awards are given after each race and not at the end like a t Nike.
After all races we will decide whether we want to eat lunch together or
return separately.
Each athlete only needs to bring enough money for Friday lunch, Friday
dinner, and Sat. lunch and possibly a t-shirt. The athletic department
is paying for the 2 rental vans and half of the entry fee. We will pay
for the rooms from the xc boosters account and assess our financial
situation after the Invitational. We should be ok. Cathy and I requested
$600 for the hotel rooms but so far no success on that. We know we will
have to pay for the Nike meet rooms so we were hoping to get some help
with these rooms.
If there are questions please email or call.
Have to say we are all pretty excited for this trip and race. Buz/Cathy

Sweep at FUMA!!
Girls - you did an AWESOME job yesterday...despite the heat, humidity, and the muddy course. I am so proud of each and every one of you. xoxox C^5
Thursday, September 8, 2011
Directions to FUMA for Parents
I-64 East to exit #136. FUMA is 17 miles south on Route 15. To get to the XC course, go past the main gate of FUMA, and just past the motel, turn left on Academy Road. After about a mile, you will be directed to field parking on your right, There should be XC signs out on Route 15 indicating the turn onto Academy Rd.
If you have never been to a cross country meet before, please take note that you are literally going to a FIELD. Be prepared to walk through the field from the car to the race. Bring your own chairs or blankets, drinks, food, etc. There is NOTHING there but a few porta-johns. Cameras and binoculars are great choices as well. Remember your stop watch or watch with a timer if you have one. Bug spray, and socks are recommended (chiggers). You may well encounter MUD so choose your footwear carefully.
Having said all of THAT, this is a good course to see the runners several times in the course of each race without having to go very far, and it's only about an hour away.
Scroll down to see post from earlier today for schedule and meet information.

AHS Girls win the Ragged Mountain Cup!
Congratulations to the Albemarle Girls! See Meet Results under.....Meet Results!!!!!
Below is the coverage on the meet from MileStat's website.
From Brandon Miles at http://va.milesplit.com/:
The Albemarle girls made it a complete sweep for the Patriots as after a tight race with defending Cup champions Western Albemarle through three legs and actually being behind going into the final leg, returning All-State cross country runner Allison Huschke not only re-claimed the lead for Albemarle but continued to build a huge margin for the rest of her 2 mile leg. The Albemarle junior Huschke ran the fastest split in the field at 12:11 with her teammate Ciera Ulan as opener clocking the second fastest overall at 12:29 to help the Albemarle girls win by nearly as large of a margin as their male counterparts with a final time of 51:08. Their eventual comfortable win could have potentially been even larger with junior Kirsten Smith actually running the third fastest split by any Albemarle runnerat 12:45 but as opening leg on the "B" team which placed third.
The Western Albemarle girls were not at full strength as they were missing one of their top returners in Peri Boswer, but also are in a bit of a rebuilding mode after losing a great senior class of runners from last fall including Mattie Webb, Killian O'Connell, and Emily Moffett. Still left from last year's podium squad includes Boswer and sub 2:20 half miler Katie Farina, who split 12:37 on the first leg. One newcomer who will be making an impact for their squad this season is freshmen Annie Taylor, who actually took the lead from Albemarle on her second leg with a 12:49 split.
Of the top 8 splits in the meet for the girls, only two runners were not from either Albemarle or Western Albemarle. Fluvanna County sophomore Nicole Douma was clocked at 12:40 on second leg, while Madeline Hermsmeier trailed only behind Albemarle's Ulan and Western's Farina on the leadoff leg at 12:42.
